Week 6--September 29-October 5, 2019

On Sunday, September 29, a group of teenagers with their pastors from Peculiar, Missouri, came to the Independence Visitors' Center. They had been learning why The Church of Jesus of Christ of Latter-day Saints was wrong, and they were there to confirm that belief. The sister missionaries gave them a tour teaching them about the history of the Saints in Independence. After the tour the sisters answered questions. After the the Q & A the group was brought up stairs where they sat in front of the Christus statue and listened to the narration. After the narration concluded the sisters bore their testimony by singing the song "I Stand All Amazed." The Spirit was very strong in the Visitors' Center. A couple of the teenagers asked for a copy of The Book of Mormon as they left. We hope they prayerfully read it. Pictured: Sisters Horman, Durfee, Lynsky, Soren, Barajas.

We wandered around Liberty and saw this marker for the Alexander W. Doniphan home. It says, "While living on this site in the 1830s, Alexander Doniphan championed the rights of an oppressed people to ensure their religious freedom. He helped create Caldwell County as a refuge for the Mormons in 1836 and refused to carry out an illegal order by his superior officer to execute Joseph Smith and other Mormon leaders in 1838. Doniphan became highly respected for his leadership and integrity."

Transfer Day was on Thursday, October 3. It was raining so we had our trusty umbrellas.

The missionaries gather for transfers. The excitement and anticipation are palpable.
Just like everywhere else in the world, they love to have their pictures taken.
Missionaries checking out the transfer pages to see where they will be assigned and who their new companion will be. Normally, the transfer sheets are posted on the side of a van that is hidden behind the church until the appropriate time.  Rain foiled the fun, but it was fun anyway.

Our weekly Friday morning training was learning about the Daily Life of First-Generation Latter-day Saints. We were divided into groups and each group had a different topic to learn about. Our topics were:Family Economy, Personal Health, Leisure, Travel, and Communication. Each group chose a representative to report what we learned. The person was asked to report in the first person and they wore some period clothes to help get them into character.

We enjoyed the Saturday sessions of General Conference. We were surprised to have President Russell M. Nelson announce the building of eight new temples at the Women's Session on Saturday night.
